kiss the cook

One of my many New Year's Resolutions is to broaden my cooking horizons by trying new recipes. (I figure if I have a lot of resolutions I'm sure to actually keep a few of them.) As a "sub resolution" to this I want to start a spice collection.

My friend Liz, who is a wonderful cook, had a great idea to add to her spice collection by buying a new spice or two every month. I figured a great way to stay motivated to buy new spices is to first purchase this from Williams-Sonoma.
I did some research on the most important (read basic) herbs and spices to keep in your kitchen. The consensus is the following are the best ones to keep on hand:
  • Basil
  • Oregano
  • Thyme
  • Tarragon
  • Rosemary
  • Curry
  • Nutmeg
  • Paprika
  • Chili Powder
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • Cumin
  • Garlic Powder
  • Saffron
  • Sage
It's safe to say I have a lot of buying to do. Luckily The Fresh Market is right across the street from my apartment where they have an endless array of herbs and spices.

My first challenge is Quinoa. Stay tuned for recipes!
